Somali-English. Once thought to be extinct, the black-maned lion of Ethiopia is a rare subspecies with a beautiful dark mane. Efforts to protect this rare species surged after one was photographed after years without sightings. Driven out of their previous homes by farming and development, small populations of black-maned lions persist in the secluded jungles and savannas of Ethiopia.
